The Remington XP 100
It was about eight o'clock in the morning as I pulled into the gun range. It looked like it was gonna be a busy Saturday morning. The parking lot was full of cars. Most of the guys were milling around talking. There was however about five people already set up on the bench of the 100 yard range. I wandered up to see what everyone was shooting that morning.
The guys set up had the normal stuff. There was a Ruger 10/22, a Winchester 30/30, a Russian Mosin Nagant, a M1 Carbine and of course one guy was shooting America's rifle the Ar 15. I took a seat on the viewing bench behind the firing line. Just as everyone was settled in and burning powder a narrow shadow appeared on the range line. The shadow had been cast by my friend Al on his way up to the bench. Al was quite the sight. He stood at 6 foot 7 inches tall, had arms that seemed as long as his body, weighed in at about 295 and not an ounce of fat in his body.
I watched as Al pulled his new gun out of his range bag. It was a strange looking pistol rifle thing. I had never seen one before. It looked like something out of a Buck Rodgers movie. It had a brown plastic stock that looked just like a Remington Nylon 66, it was bolt action and had about a 14 inch ventilated rib barrel. As he placed on the bench nobody shooting paid him any attention. He then donned padded leather shooting gloves on his giant hands. He placed one round in the chamber closed the bolt placed the forearm on a sand bag and pulled the trigger. You would thought somebody pulled the trigger on a cannon. The noise caused everyone to stop shooting. Out of the barrel shot about a 3 foot flame and the concussion caused all of the leaves to slide off the range house roof. Everyone lined up to get a turn to shoot Al's XP100 in 35 Remington caliber.
The Remington XP-100 was designed in 1961. It was produced from 1963 to 1998. It weighs 3.7 pounds with a 10.75 inch barrel and was 14 inches overall. It was chambered in .221 fireball, .223 Remington, .250 Savage, 6mm Br Remington, 7mm BR Remington, 7mm-08 Remington, .308 Winchester and 35.
